‘Nizza’ is one of the newest DOCG’s in Italy and has been established to recognise the unique micro climate, the hilly landscape and soil (terroir) in the World Heritage town of Nizza Monferatto and the 18 specific communes that surround the town.

If you love high end Barolo and Barbaresco there are some amazing wine shops or enotecas in the Barolo and Barbaresco vilages that are 'must visits'!  Some of these shops have some world class wines that you will only find in this area of Piedmont. Whilst it is a great eperience to visit specific producers to try their wines, it can also be really interesting to visit these shops and see their vast array of unique wines and get the chance to try some, all in one place.   

Piedmont (Piemonte in Italian) is the second largest of Italy’s 20 regions, after Sicily. It has an area of 25,402 sq.km (9,808 sq mi) and a population of about 4.6 million. The capital Turin (Torino) is a beautiful and fascinating city. There are grand covered walkways, royal Palaces, stunning Baroque architecture, amazing art galleries and world class museums. The political movement for the unification of Italy started here and was briefly the capital of the unified country. 

At this time of year in our part of Piedmont the grape harvest is over and thoughts turn to finding or trying to find the elusive White Truffle! The White Truffle is one of the most expensive and mysterious foods in the world. They are found mainly in the Langhe and Monferrato areas of Piedmont and most famously in the countryside around the cities of Alba and Asti.

We recently attended the inaugural ‘iL Nizza E’ tasting in the home of Barbera D’Asti ‘Nizza Monferrato’.  The event took place at the historic Regional Enoteca in Palazzo Crova located in the centre of the World Heritage city (more of this in a later blog).
